California is home 76 HSIs as of fall 2018 (33% of all HSIs in the US) and comprises a wide variety of institutional types situated in a range of geographic locations and higher education watersheds. With approximately 4,500 social scientists in the 33 campuses of the CSU and UC, this diverse landscape enables a comparative study of social science research and grant activity practices across a set of variables that can help us understand barriers to extramural social science grant activity, and new ways to catalyze multi-campus collaborative social science.
